Civil War Cannons Return To Williamsport
WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) -- Three Civil War cannons are back in Williamsport following restoration.
The cannons mounted on historically accurate carriages were taken by horse back to Doubleday Hill on Saturday. The cannons, which had been previously been mounted on brick pedestals were taken from the hill in 2000. They were sent last August to Steen Cannons in Kentucky for restoration.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports the cannons were acquired by the town in 1897 to honor local men who fought and died in the Civil War. The Doubleday Hill Monument overlooks the Potomac River and commemorates the area's occupation by Major Gen. Abner Doubleday.
Williamsport Town Councilman Scott Bragunier said the town received a grant from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority to partially fund the restoration.
