Christmas Comes Early For Fells Point
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Start spreading the news...St. Nick is on his way to Fells Point for a big weekend of festivities.
Ron Matz has more on the sights and sounds of the season in one of Baltimore's most historic neighborhood.
Singing group Smooth Teaze is in harmony and ready for the crowds at Olde Tyme Christmas in Fells Point.
Member Larry Skinner says he is looking forward to giving back and doing something people will enjoy.
"We'll be here Saturday and I can't wait. We'll be singing the old songs, 'Frosty the Snowman,' 'White Christmas' and everything," said Skinner.
For the first time, Olde Tyme Christmas will be extended from a day-long event to a weekend-long celebration. It will kick off Friday after Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake proclaims Fells Point one of the 10 best neighborhoods.
"We've added a beer and wine tasting tent. We have sleigh rides Friday evening and all-day Saturday," said Joy Giordano, executive director of Fells Point Main Street, "In Broadway Square, we're going to be having our holiday market. We'll have food vendors. We'll have craft vendors with holiday items for sale."
The city began its holiday celebration two weeks ago and Old Tyme Christmas will have something for everyone.
"It brings in a lot of kids. It reminds everyone of the olden days when Christmas used to be a real family tradition. The family gathered together around the hearth," said Juliette Richter, President of Fells Point Main Street.
St. Nick will arrive by tugboat in Fells Point Saturday at 9 a.m.
"We have breakfast at Shuckers where kids can take photographs with St. Nick. That will happen 9 a.m. until noon," said Giordano.
From Max's on Broadway to the Admiral Fell Inn, the area will be a great place to celebrate.
Saturday's celebration in Fells Point will include a tree lighting ceremony around 5 p.m., followed by the parade of lighted boats.
