5-Year-Old Girl In The Torso In Baltimore, Police Believe Shooting To Be Accidental
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A child was shot in the torso in what police believe to be an accidental shooting on Wednesday night in the Glen neighborhood of northwest Baltimore.
It happened inside a home in the 3300 block of Menlo Drive.
Police described the scene as frantic and said that the child that was shot was a 5-year-old girl.
"Just screaming and hollering and crying," James Cooper, a neighbor, said of the scene.
Cooper also said the father was hysterical.
"I just saw the baby laying over there on that blanket," Cooper said. "The father just hollering and screaming, but we didn't know what had happened until we saw the baby. Then police officers said that she was shot."
Baltimore detective Nicki Monroe said the shooting happened inside of the home sometime after 6 p.m.
Police said they will interview everyone who was inside the home, but at this time, do not believe that the shooting was intentional.
"It appears to be accidental," Monroe said. "I don't know how that accident occurred, whether or not she shot herself, or maybe she was shot by someone in the house."
Glen neighborhood is just blocks from Pimlico. Police said that neighbors drove the child's parents to the hospital after the girl was transported in an ambulance.
Councilman Isaac Yitzy Schleifer represents the area.
"The neighborhood is really one big family," he said. "As you can see, there were neighbors and others who are crying up the block."
Police have not yet identified the child.
She was taken to Sinai Hospital where her condition has been stabilized.
