Chester, Sassafras Rivers Joining John Smith Trail
CHESTERTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Kayakers will paddle down the Chester River on Maryland's Eastern Shore to celebrate its addition to the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
The kayak trip Friday commemorates the addition of the Chester and Sassafras rivers to the trail, which allows visitors to re-live Smith's exploration of the Chesapeake between 1607 and 1609. Smith and his crew mapped nearly 3,000 miles of the bay and its rivers and documented American Indian communities.
The National Park Service says the trail is the nation's first water-based national historic trail.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar designated the two rivers, along with the Susquehanna, Upper Nanticoke and Upper James rivers as part of the trail in May.
