2 Charles County Deputies Will Need Surgery After Shooting At Waldorf Home
WALDORF, Md. (WJZ) -- Two deputies remain in the hospital after being shot by an armed suspect in the Pine Field Community in Charles County.
The suspect is dead and the two officers are expected to undergo surgery.
Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry said, "Two officers were struck multiple times and they were able to retreat," after someone called 911 around 3:30 p.m. Monday saying their family member was a mental crisis.
Deputies learned the suspect had an active warrant and when family members let the officers inside they were led upstairs. Berry said, "The officers got to the upstairs area of the home and were immediately fired upon by the individual in the residence."
Berry said the suspect then barricaded himself inside the home. A door was left open so officers were able to see inside.
"We did utilize our drone that went into the front door of the home and Found the individual inside the residence again deceased and there was a handgun beside the individual with an extended magazine," Berry said.
How the suspect died is unclear.
"We did confirm that we had officers return fire on the initial incident we do not know if those particular rounds struck the individual," said Berry.
The name of the suspect and deputies have not been released.
The two deputies are stable but still in serious condition.
