Ceremony Honors Late Frostburg State Football Player
GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Frostburg State University football player who suffered a fatal concussion last year is getting some permanent recognition at his Germantown high school.
The Derek Sheely Foundation is dedicating a white oak tree and a plaque to Sheely Friday evening just outside the Northwest High School stadium where he once played.
Sheely helped lead his 2006 high school team to a 12-1 record. He was the starting fullback for Frostburg State when he died after a helmet-to-helmet hit during practice in August 2011.
Sheely's parents established the foundation to raise awareness of sports-related concussions and help prevent such injuries.
