CBF: Goodlatte Amendment Puts Bay Burden On States
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says House passage of a Virginia congressman's amendment on bay restoration puts the cleanup burden on the states and local governments.
The House passed an amendment Friday night sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte to ban the use of federal dollars to implement the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay restoration plan.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation President William C. Baker says the vote effectively removes the federal government as a partner, and puts the burden on the states, municipalities, and individuals in the bay watershed.
Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican, says the six states in watershed have made steady progress to cut pollution and the EPA's approach will burden states and localities with huge costs.
