CBF Decries House Coal Bill As Election Initiative
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says a bill passed by House Republicans in Washington is an election year move that could threaten bay restoration efforts.
The foundation says the "Stop the War on Coal" act would strip the Environmental Protection Agency of much of its ability to protect clean water. Despite the House vote Friday, the bill is considered dead on arrival in the Democratic-led Senate, and the president has threatened a veto should if the bill reaches his desk.
CBF federal affair's director Doug Siglin described the vote as an election-season initiative to convince Americans the EPA is over-reaching. Siglin says the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort being led by the EPA is based on science and has the broad support of residents in the bay watershed.
