Cash Donations Stolen From D.C. Salvation Army Site
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Salvation Army says someone broke into one of its community centers in Washington and stole at least $10,000 in donations collected through the charity's Red Kettle Program.
The Salvation Army says the Solomon G. Brown Corps Community Center was burglarized at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. The charity says a suspect broke into the administrative office and stole several days of proceeds from the Red Kettle donations.
The Salvation Army says a security guard confronted the suspect who had a knife. No one was injured.
Maj. Lewis Reckline, commander of the Salvation Army National Capital Area Command, says officials hope the money will be returned. He says the funds were donated to help local families who are struggling in southeast Washington.
