Car With 3 Dead, Including 2 Children, Apparently Was Parked For Hours
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WJZ) -- Heartbreak in Hagerstown. A mother and her two children are found dead in their car. Right now, their deaths are a mystery.
Mary Bubala reports police say they found no signs of foul play.
The 32-year-old mother was in the driver's seat, reclined as though for a rest. The 18 and 6-month-old baby girls were strapped in their car seats in the back of the small silver car. Both girls had bottles within reach.
The engine was off and the car was unlocked with all windows closed when horrified staffers at Western Heights Middle School discovered the bodies.
"People go into this field because they have a love and an affinity for children. They have a passion, so they have big hearts. So when you find something out like this, it's hard not to be heavy-hearted," said principal Michael Kuhanick.
How and why the mother and children died remains a mystery. Police do not believe that any violence or outside suspects were involved. Whether the deaths were intentional or accidental is unknown.
"It was very hot when the first responders opened up the car, so it's very possible that it was just a heat-related death. But we're not closing out anything right now," said Captain Paul Kifer, Hagerstown Police.
Sources say there were no sign of drugs in the woman's car or in her Hagerstown apartment. And while police are not yet releasing her name, we know the woman was an immigrant from Guyana and lived in a unit across town from where she was found.
"She seemed really nice. She seemed like a caring mom," said neighbor Brandon Osori.
Osori tells WJZ he saw no signs of trouble.
"Her one little girl would always try to open our door. And one time I came home from work and she just turned around and ran to me and gave me a hug. It was really cute," he said.
Autopsies by the medical examiner's office will determine how the mother and her two children died.
Police say the woman had no connection to Western Heights Middle School that they know of.
