Canadian Company Sues Md. Gambling Commission
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Canadian developer whose bid to build a slots casino in Baltimore was rejected is suing the state's gambling commission.
The Baltimore Sun reports the suit was filed Tuesday in federal court by Michael Moldenhauer's Baltimore City Entertainment Group. It contends that the Maryland Video Lottery Facility Location Commission's bidding process discriminates against companies owned by white men, and that the minority- or female-owned selection factor in its request for proposals is "unlawful."
The city accepted the proposal from the company — the sole bidder on the project in 2009 — but Moldenhauer was turned down for a state slots license.
The suit cites an attorney general letter recommending the governor not sign a bill to extend the minority-business participation requirements for slots without a study to verify its need.
