Cal Ripken Discusses Mother's Kidnapping
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- In a new interview about the abduction of his mother, Cal Ripken reveals the tolls it has taken on his family. The suspect has still not been caught, four months after a terrifying 24 hours for the Ripkens.
Mary Bubala has more.
She's the beloved matriarch of the Ripken family, affectionately known as "Vi" for Violent. She's the first mom of baseball and Baltimore loves and cares about her--so no one could believe anyone would want to harm her.
But police say a man abducted Vi Ripken from her home at gunpoint, tied her up and drove her around for 24 hours in the backseat of her own car. To this day, he has not been caught and that weighs heavily on the Ripkens.
"Mom is forever affected, there's no doubt about it," Cal Ripken said. "We're forever affected as a result of that and it's a little unsettling. He's still out there and I think Mom is coping as best she can."
He says it was the scare of a lifetime and there's new security in place for his 74-year-old mom as they try as a family to get back to normal.
"That's the hard part, in many ways, to cope with it. You want to forget about it but you can't forget about it until there is some sort of closure," he said.
The suspect dropped Vi Ripken off just feet from her home, unharmed. Police continue to investigate and have released new photos of the suspect taken from the surveillance camera at the Wal-Mart in Middle River. No arrests have been made.
