Business Executive Wakes Up Early At Cyber Security Startup
Chris Fedde is president of Hexis Cyber Solutions, a startup venture by its parent company, KEYW Corp. Prior to his tenure at Hexis, Fedde was president and CEO of SafeNet Inc. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in electrical engineering.
What drew you to cyber security and, in particular, to Hexis?
"I have always been drawn to the fast pace of IT security. Now, cyber security is making headlines. The stakes are high on many levels, thus, I was drawn to Hexis Cyber Solutions. Our parent company, KEYW, provided Hexis with an opportunity, and nothing builds real value like a startup. I'm working with industry experts who have been successful before, so the probability for success is greatly enhanced."
How has your education helped to further your career and contributed to your success?
"My education taught me the importance of communication. When it comes to running a startup, it's essential to effectively communicate with a core group of people who have a wide array of skills and techniques. It's also an important aspect of leadership. Having a background in engineering taught me that everything is solvable. It is just a matter of figuring out what the missing factor is. It gave me confidence that I can handle problems in this way. Having confidence will help you move forward and grow."
What is some advice you can offer others looking to go into cyber security?
"Cyber security is a very broad space so find the area you really enjoy and it will make you want to get up early in the morning. Be quick to course correct as you discover new aspects and fields; as the saying goes, 'you won't know until you try.' Cyber security is constantly changing, there is a premium on continuing education and employee retraining because of new advances, technologies, and skills that can be learned or improved upon. Learning doesn't stop once you receive a degree or graduate, I learn new things every day and my management style is constantly evolving. You are never stuck and you are never done learning, don't let yourself think otherwise."
