Budget Woes May Cancel Classes At Naval Academy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- U.S. Naval Academy officials say federal budget cuts could lead to canceled classes.
Academy spokesman Cmdr. John Schofield says the cuts will mean furlough days.
Schofield says Department of Defense civilian employees must take 11 furlough days between July 8 and Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year. He says that will mean taking two days per pay period as furlough days. About half of the faculty members at the school are civilian employees.
The possibility of canceled classes was first reported by the U.S. News & World Report.
Schofield says officials anticipate some classes may need to be canceled because of a faculty member's furlough day, but it's hard to tell yet how many classes or which ones. He doesn't believe the furloughs will affect the academy's mission.
