Broncos Officially Name Gary Kubiak As Head Coach
DENVER, Colo. (WJZ) -- The Ravens now have a major item on their off-season list: hire a new offensive coordinator. Monday, Gary Kubiak accepted the head coaching job with the Denver Broncos.
Denise Koch has more on Kubiak's departure and the impact it will have on the Ravens going forward.
Last Monday, Gary Kubiak said he was planning to stay with the Ravens as their offensive coordinator---but that was before his former team came calling.
Kubiak spent 20 years of his football life in Denver. He was a backup quarterback to John Elway and then later became the team's offensive coordinator.
Kubiak will best be remembered in Baltimore for reviving a Ravens offense that was dormant in 2013. This past season, the Ravens set a franchise record for points and yards and during the season, quarterback Joe Flacco often spoke about the influence Kubiak had on the team.
"The biggest thing with Gary is just the confidence he gives to the unit and then getting out there and taking the game plan we built all week and applying it on Sunday. I think Gary does a great job of doing that," he said.
The Ravens offense was at its best in the post-season. They scored 30 points in Pittsburgh and 31 in their playoff loss in New England.
Former Colt and football analyst Bruce Laird says Kubiak will be greatly missed on game day.
"He was the play-caller for this offense and Joe is going to miss that tremendously and I think the Baltimore Ravens will miss that tremendously as you see what they were able to accomplish this year," he said.
Kubiak's departure was a major topic of conversation Monday morning on WJZ-FM 105.7 The Fan.
"Can Joe Flacco get a consistent offensive coordinator? Doesn't he have the cache at this point in time to make an imprint on who he'd like to see in?" said one fan.
The Ravens will reportedly interview former offensive coordinator Adam Gase and former Bears head coach Mark Trestman.
Torrey Smith Tweeted out his congratulations saying Kubiak did his job and was rewarded with a dream opportunity.
