Boxing Legend's Family Wants Stolen Heirloom Back
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- An Annapolis family is hoping the public can help them find a stolen heirloom.
Andrea Fujii explains this is no ordinary piece of family history.
We're talking about a championship boxing belt that's worth more than just its weight in gold.
Boxer Pat McAteer was the United Kingdom's version of Muhammad Ali. He's best known for his 40-fight winning streak and his 1957 middleweight British Boxing title, awarding him the coveted Lonsdale Championship belt.
"It meant everything in the world to us. It is the most coveted prize in boxing," said McAteer's son, Peter McAteer.
But on March 8, police say McAteer's Annapolis home on Winchester Road was broken into and the safe containing the belt was stolen.
Whoever stole the belt dragged the entire 400 pound safe down four flights of stairs and took it outside in broad daylight.
McAteer's son hopes someone saw something, including a strange vehicle in the area.
"An older model faded red vehicle that was seen in the area, possibly occupied by two males. That's a vehicle that is of interest," said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County Police.
The belt is decorated in 24-karat gold, but that's not why McAteer---who passed away in 2009---wanted his family to keep it for future generations.
"It's one of a kind. He won it. He deserved it. It's ours," Peter McAteer said.
Besides the belt, jewelry and personal documents were also stolen.
Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000. If you know anything, call Anne Arundel County Police.
