Boog Powell Talks O's Struggles
Orioles Hall of Famer Boog Powell joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the Orioles' current struggles at the plate, the 50th anniversary of the 1966 World Series team and Chris Davis' long foul ball last night.
The Orioles are 5-10 in their last 15 games and have lost 7 of their last 9. Boog thinks the Orioles struggles started with the Angels series. "I think the whole thing started with [Jered] Weaver out in California. He can mess your time up. You can never know what to expect with a guy like that."
On Monday, Boston's knuckleballer Steven Wright threw a complete game, four-hitter against the scuffling Orioles lineup. The guys asked Boog what his strategy used to be when he went up against knuckleballers. "I had pretty good luck against knuckleballers. I used to get right up on top of the plate. I would get as far up in the box as I could get…It's a tough pitch to hit."
The Orioles are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1966 World Series team this season. Powell talked about that team and what makes them different from this year's club. "A lot of great memories…It was a great group and we did everything we could do to win…When I got hot, Frank cooled off and Brooks cooled off a little bit and then when I cooled off, they got hot. One of the guys needs to step up and do something."
Chris Davis crushed a ball down the line last night that was called foul and the call was upheld after being reviewed. Boog told a story about how he crushed a long, towering fly ball just like Chris Davis did last night. "I hit one in Cleveland one night and I thought it was foul. I thought it was foul by twenty feet…and the first base umpire pointed fair…I'm kind of glad there wasn't any instant replay on that one."
