Bob Haynie: Zack Greinke Speaks The Truth
You have to love honesty. In the sporting world, during interviews, often times athletes and team leaders will give you coach-speak, cliches, phrases and politically correct answers.
Not Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Grienke. When the free-agent righty was asked by CBSSports.com why he signed with L.A., Grienke kept it real.
He signed for the money.
"I could play for the worst team if they paid the most," Greinke said. "If the last-place team offers $200 million and the first-place team offers $10, I'm going to go for the $200 million no matter what team it was."
How refreshing to hear.
Most of the time, you will hear the free-agent player who signed for the big-money deal, say things like: "They wanted me the most", or " I grew up a fan of this team", or " The tradition speaks for itself", or " I want to win a championship".
Blah, blah, blah.
They go for the cash.
Zack Greinke Speaks The Truth
I'm not saying that players don't grow up fans of certain teams. That happens. I'm assuming most players do want to win, as well.
And some players do take less to be happy in their environment.
As a matter of fact, I think Ravens QB Joe Flacco will be one that falls into that category once his deal gets done.
In most cases, though, it's all about the green.
Don't get me wrong, I do not begrudge an athlete that gets all they can get. We all want to be financially secure.
Just don't give us any BS.
I want to thank Zack Grienke for telling us something we already knew.
