Bob Haynie: You Can Have Grace In Losing
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has been under fire for walking out of his postgame press conference after his team lost Super Bowl 50. The favored Panthers were defeated by the Denver Broncos 24-10 and Newton had his worst game of the season.
Newton, who was named as the NFL MVP, was under media scrutiny all last week during the build up the league's championship game. In my opinion, he handled all of the hubbub well.
There was a lot of commotion going on as he was meeting with the media and getting peppered with the same question over and over. I can see where that would get tiresome and understand how he would not want any part of it.
However, it is a part of being the face of your team and one of the marquee faces of the NFL.
Newton defended his actions by saying that he is a "sore loser." I'm assuming everyone associated with the Panthers was not that happy with the way Super Bowl 50 turned out.
He is not the only person who lost that game. Of course, QB's tend to get most of the credit and most of the blame for things that happen on a football field.
Newton also said that a person who likes to lose is a loser. I don't like to lose either. Most competitive people want to finish on top.
As we know, that doesn't always happen and there are ways to deal with a loss without pouting. Newton handled his team's loss immaturely.
Just because some people can handle defeat without being petulant doesn't make them a loser.
