Bob Haynie: Wright Tosses A Gem For The Orioles
Welcome to Baltimore Mike Wright.
After losing two tough games to the Los Angeles Angels, the Orioles needed a boost in the series finale at Camden Yards. Wright provided just that in an impressive performance in front of over 40K on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
In his Major League debut, the big righty shutout the Angels for 7.1 innings to earn his first victory and help the Orioles get a much-needed 3-0 win. Wright allowed only four hits and didn't walk a batter as the Birds ended L.A.'s five-game winning streak.
I know the 2015 Angels aren't exactly Murderer's Row, but Wright looked like a seasoned pro as he mowed down a lineup that did include the likes of Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. Wright finished with six K's in his 90 pitch outing.
Wright's performance was just the latest quality start from the Baltimore rotation as he followed the strong showings of Wei-Yin Chen and Ubaldo Jimenez. Unfortunately, those two were tagged with losses as the Orioles could only muster two runs combined in the first two games against the Angels.
The Birds head into their Monday off-day trailing the Yankees by four games in the AL East. They're only two back in the loss column as Memorial Day Weekend looms.
The Orioles are a flawed team, but every club in the division has its share of problems. It will be interesting to see what team will make the first real run to assume control. Of course, it's a long season.
For Mike Wright, he made it a long Sunday afternoon for the Angels.
Here's hoping he has a long stay in the Baltimore rotation. He looks like a keeper.
