Bob Haynie: Wells And Trimble Lead The Way For Maryland
The Maryland Terrapins have won four-straight games as they look to hit their stride with the month of March looming. The Terps are 23-5 overall and 11-4 in their debut season in the Big Ten.
One of the main reasons for Maryland's recent hot-streak and their long stay in the Top 25 this season has been the play of the Dynamic Duo of Dez Wells and Melo Trimble. Over the last four games, the two players have been taking turns making crucial plays for head coach Mark Turgeon and the Terps.
In Maryland's 68-66 victory over Indiana, Wells and Trimble each scored 18 points as the Terps avenged an earlier defeat to the Hoosiers. Wells tallied 22 and Trimble added 20 as the Turtles won 76-73 at Penn State. Trimble was scintillating against Nebraska as he pumped in 26 points at the XFINITY Center. Wells chipped in 14 as the Terps beat the Huskers 69-65.
Against fifth-ranked Wisconsin on Tuesday night, Wells played the best game of his Maryland career as he scored 26 points and was virtually unstoppable getting to the basket. Trimble was there with 16 critical points and made some big hoops in the closing minutes as the Terps upset the Badgers 59-53.
Trimble, the fabulous freshman who is Maryland's first McDonald's All-American since 2003, leads the team in scoring at 16.1 PPG. Wells, the senior transfer from Xavier, is second in scoring (15.1 PPG) and is the team's unquestioned leader.
Maryland will be going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. With good guard play, schools can make a deep run in March.
With Trimble at the point and Wells as the swingman, the Terps will have a fighting chance once they get to the Big Dance.
