Bob Haynie: Unbelievable QB Situation At Maryland
Wow. Unbelievable.
The University of Maryland football team has sure been cursed by the QB gods this season.
On Sunday, head coach Randy Edsall announced that freshman quarterback Caleb Rowe had suffered a torn ACL against Boston College and would be out for the rest of the year.
Usually, when a team loses it's starting QB , it's a devastating blow. For the Terps, this is the FOURTH time in 2012 that they have made such an announcement.
A year ago, Edsall had Danny O'Brien and C.J. Brown as his quarterbacks with Devin Burns ready, just in case. In addition, Perry Hills and Rowe had committed to the recruiting class of '12.
Let's turn the clock ahead, shall we.
O'Brien, the 2010 ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, has transferred to Wisconsin. Brown, Hills and Rowe are done with ACL's. Burns, who had moved back to QB from WR, broke his foot. He too is out for the season.
Maryland's new starting QB? Backup linebacker Shawn Petty.
No doubt this has been a trying time for Edsall. His team was on the verge of making a serious run at a bowl game. After a two-win 2011, getting to bowl would have been a fine achievement.
Those hopes may not be dashed, but they are less realistic than they were two weeks ago.
With Stefon Diggs, Wes Brown and the young QB's, the future of Maryland football seems to be bright.
For the next four games of 2012, it's all about perseverance.
If Edsall can manage to get his team to a bowl, he should be ACC COY.
The injuries to his QB's have been unbelievable.
