Bob Haynie: The Orioles Are Quiet On A Rainy Night
The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles met at Camden Yards on Tuesday night where the rain was plentiful but runs were not. The Red Sox did manage to tally once. Unfortunately, for the Orioles, it was a night in which their offense was silent.
Boston righty Brandon Workman held the Birds to one hit over 6.2 IP to help the Sox to a 1-0 victory in the middle game of this three-game set. Mike Napoli's 3rd-inning single brought home the game's only run on an evening that featured two rain delays.
The lack of offense made a loser of Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman. Tillman bounced back from a horrendous performance against the Texas Rangers to give his team a solid effort by only allowing the one run in 6 IP.
A night after the Orioles hit three home runs, Ryan Flaherty and Steve Pearce were the only players to reach base via hit against Boston pitching.
The loss dropped the Orioles into a second-place tie with the New York Yankees in the AL East. Both teams trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 5.5 games heading into Wednesday's action.
Tuesday night's defeat left the Birds with a 13-15 home record. Obviously, that needs to improve if Baltimore wants to sniff any sort of 2014 postseason action.
As we now approach mid-June, manager Buck Showalter's Orioles are still searching for that elusive consistency. They had hoped to find it on their current home stand.
So far, that has not been the case.
