Bob Haynie: Ravens Get A Win And Some Help
Heading into Sunday's NFL games, six AFC teams had posted a record of 7-5. One of those teams was the Baltimore Ravens. After the day's action was done, only two of the six improved to 8-5. Thanks to their 28-13 victory over the Dolphins in Miami, the Ravens were one of the two.
Baltimore is now tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for second place in the AFC North. The Steelers thumped the Bengals in Cincinnati 42-21 to --like the Ravens-- move to within a half-game of the division lead.
The Cleveland Browns were another of the 7-5 clubs, but they were edged at home by the Indianapolis Colts, 25-24. Cleveland has lost two-straight and has fallen into last place in the AFC North.
Aside from Miami and Cleveland the other 7-5 teams to taste defeat were the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills fell to the Broncos in Denver 24-17. In Arizona, the Chiefs were shutout in the second half as they were beaten by the Cardinals 17-14. As a matter of fact, the Chiefs have dropped three-straight and their season is now in peril.
For the Ravens, Sunday's win was huge. After a slow start, the offense got rolling and eventually put up 447 yards as they outscored the Dolphins 21-3 in the second half.
Defensively, Baltimore put serious pressure on Miami QB Ryan Tannehill as they sacked him six times.
The Ravens will next host the 2-11 Jacksonville Jaguars this coming Sunday at M & T Bank Stadium. Baltimore has already lost two home games and they can ill-afford to lose another. Especially against a team they are expected to throttle.
While 8-5 sounds pretty good, 9-5 is even more exciting.
That's what Baltimore's record should be a week from today.
Well, it better be.
