Bob Haynie: Ravens Do Well With Offensive Hires
When Gary Kubiak left his position as offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens to become head coach of the Denver Broncos, it caused quite a stir. Not only did Kubiak leave, he took QB coach Rick Dennison and TE coach Brian Pariani with him.
The departures left a void within the ranks of John Harbaugh's staff. The Ravens had a big year on offense and those guys had a lot to do with it.
As we fast forward a couple of days, maybe the coaching situation isn't as dire as some feared.
The Ravens worked fast and replaced Kubiak with former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman. Like Kubiak, Trestman likes the West Coast offense and has been an offensive coordinator for four NFL teams (Browns, 49'ers, Cardinals and Raiders). Trestman has a low-key personality that should work well with Baltimore QB Joe Flacco.
Dennison was replaced as QB coach by Marty Mornhinweg who was recently the OC of the Jets. Mornhinweg, who was head coach of the Lions in 2001-02, also has ties to the West Coast offense. As an offensive assistant, he has helped five quarterbacks (Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia and Brett Favre) get to the Pro Bowl.
Of course, we can not fully judge these hires until we start to see some results. However, we do know that both men have pretty strong resumes.
Hopefully, they will help keep Flacco and the offense moving in a positive direction.
