Bob Haynie: Davis Breaks Out For The Orioles
What slump?
There is no denying that Baltimore Orioles 1B Chris Davis has not had the kind of 2014 season that he and most fans are expecting him to have. Davis has spent time on the DL and has not been crushing home runs the way that he had in smashing 86 taters over the past two years combined.
Well, he gave the Pirates a glimpse of that power on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.
Davis got medieval on the baseball as he blasted three HR's to pace the Orioles to a 9-2 victory over the Pirates at PNC Park. With that outburst, Davis doubled his season home run total and allowed some concerned fans to breath easy.
Now, I'm not saying that Chris Davis is going to go on an unprecedented power streak, but it is definitely a positive sign from the Orioles All-Star slugger. Maybe it will propel him to greater things.
LF Nelson Cruz hit his 13th HR for the Birds as they collected 12 hits for the second-straight game. The--so far--underachieving offense has scored 15 runs in the last two contests.
The defense turned three double plays to back starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez. Gonzalez (2-3) scattered seven hits with no walks as he pitched into the seventh inning to provide the Orioles with a quality start.
Manager Buck Showalter has to be pleased with the fact that six of the last seven Orioles' starts have been easily acceptable.
Can the pitching continue it's revival? Who is the closer? Is the offense ready to find it's happy place?
All of these questions still need to be answered.
