Bob Haynie: College & Pro Football Picks
I think we can all agree that the 2013 football seasons has flown by. It seems like only yesterday that I was picking the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans to meet in the Super Bowl. Of course, both of the those teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention which will have an adverse effect on their chances of getting to the big game.
But I digress.
With the exception of Army vs. Navy, the college campaign has hit the bowl season. This year's bowl fun will feature the Maryland Terrapins for the first time since 2010. Congratulations to Randy Edsall and his troups for earing a Military Bowl bid against Marshall.
Since there is only one major college contest this weekend, I will be adding a couple of NFL games to my picks for mid-December.
I had my best performance in a while with last weekend's games. Nothing exceptional, mind you, but positive, for sure.
Four and two. After a slew of losers, I'll take it.
In college, I had a couple of a picks that I should be proud of. In the SEC championship game, Auburn (-2) and Missouri put on an offensive show in Atlanta. Both teams combined for over 1,100 total yards as Auburn earned a right to play for the BCS title, 59-42. In the Big Ten championship, I went for the upset and took Michigan State (+5.5). The Spartans made me look good by taking out the previously unbeaten Ohio State Buckeyes 34-24. Speaking of upsets, Bowling Green spoiled Northern Illinois' (-4.5) BCS hopes--and my perfect college week--with a 47-27 rout of the Huskies.
It was an exciting Sunday in the NFL as weather was a factor in many cities. The bad weather hit Baltimore where the Ravens (-7.5) needed a miracle finish to defeat the Vikings 29-26. I felt good about the Chiefs (-3) who looked good in crushing the Redskins 45-10. The Broncos (-13) were my other winner as they put a 51-28 spanking on the Titans.
My record now stands at 43-39-2.
