BLOG: Spoiler Alert In Baltimore; Who You Got?
Well, well, well... The baseball Gods should have known it would come down to this. First, last night's epic game between the two biggest rivals in sports history battled it out through 14 long innings -- The Red Sox were hanging onto dear lives and the Yankees, with nothing on the line, wouldn't lay down, even if it meant getting into Tampa at 6am this morning for a crucial three-game series for the Rays. Of course the Yankees are holding both the Red Sox' and Rays' fate in their own hands. With a one game lead in the Wild Card race, the Red Sox will now play the Orioles here at Camden Yards and hope the Yankees take care of business at The Trop in St. Pete, Fla.
In my opinion, the Yankees should prefer to play the banged up Red Sox in the ALDS, especially since they already locked up home field advantage throughout the postseason. Tampa's pitching is far superior to Boston's and a Yankees-Rays series would avoid more drama than "All My Children."
Another team not backing down is the Orioles, who have absolutely nothing to play for except pride. However, being the third worst team in the Majors, it's a little too late for that. However, there's something to be said for finishing a season strong when there's nothing on the line and for that, the Orioles deserve all the credit in the world.
How will this all play out? We'll just have to scoreboard watch along with Joe Girardi, Terry Francona and Joe Maddon. Until then, the champagne has arrived in Baltimore with the Red Sox. The only question is whether or not it will be popped.
