WEATHER BLOG: Moderate To Heavy Rain Across Md., Late Snowstorm For Mountains
A strengthening nor'easter is moving up the coast. For us, it's bringing the soaking rain that we need. Trees, lawns, and flowers are just exploding with color as they drink it up.
Going into Sunday, we had about a 5" rainfall deficit. WJZ Drought Watch continues to track rainfall numbers, and Sunday's numbers are really cutting into that deficit. At 10 p.m., we are averaging about 1-2" of rain around the state with the lower Eastern Shore over 2". Those numbers will continue to climb with rain still falling across most of the state.
While most of us are getting rain, it's going to be a different story across the ridges of Western Maryland. A winter storm warning is in effect through Tuesday morning for Garrett and Western Allegany Counties. A winter storm watch is in effect for the same time frame for the rest of Allegany County. Believe it or not, this is going to be a very wet, heavy, late season snowstorm for the mountains.
The moderate to heavy rain for the rest of us will wind down overnight. However, the center of the storm will still be strengthening just off to our north so it will have an effect on our weather through Tuesday. Gusty winds will make for two cold, blustery days. Highs will struggle to top 50 degrees Monday, then just to the mid 50s Tuesday. That is about 15 degrees below average. There will also be a lot of clouds and spotty showers until this storm gets the boot Wednesday. We wouldn't even be surprised if some of the rain showers mixed with snow showers down to the city Monday night/Tuesday.
Sunshine will return, helping to warm us back to the 60s Wednesday. Then, another storm will move our way from the west Thursday into Friday. It will bring another chance for still needed rain.
