Bob Haynie: Losing Howard Is Not What Turgeon Needed

Maryland basketball coach Mark Turgeon joined The Bob and Rob Show a couple of weeks back and talked about a variety of topics relating to his team.

One of his main concerns with the 2011-12 Terps was the squad's lack of depth. On Thursday, that concern turned into a possible crisis.

The school announced that sophomore guard Pe'Shon Howard has a broken foot and is expected to be out at least 10-12 weeks. Howard was penciled in as Maryland's starting point guard.

With Howard out and 7'1 freshman Alex Len still not cleared to play by the NCAA, Turgeon is working with seven scholarship players as an open practice looms on Saturday.

Fellow sophomore Terrell Stoglin will assume point duties for the Terps and will have the ball in his hands a lot. Not that Stoglin will have a problem with that, by the way.

Howard's absence means freshman Nick Faust from Baltimore will see his minutes increase. Hopefully, Faust is a quick learner.

We have discussed the fact that this will be a transition year for Maryland hoops and could be a tough year for Turgeon.

The loss of Howard has made the new coach's job that much tougher.
