BLOG: Another Day, Another Record

At 2 p.m. today, we are already up to 97 degrees. That ties the record for the date, that was set way back in 1895. The temperature is still rising, so there is a good chance that we will break this record - and may even do it with the 3 p.m. temperature update. This is the third consecutive day with either record-breaking or record-tying heat. Not only is the temperature high again today, but the dewpoint/humidity is still running very high. The combination gives us a heat index in the low 100s this afternoon across most of the region. That's why the heat advisory was re-issued again today and will remain in effect through 8 p.m. There is relief coming, but it will probably come at a price.

A cold front will swing through Maryland this afternoon/evening. In this kind of an atmosphere, it won't take much for any thunderstorm to become strong or maybe even severe. The Storm Prediction Center, who is responsible in conjunction with our local National Weather Service for issuing watches, is currently monitoring our area and is considering issuing a watch soon. If a watch or any warnings are issued, we will definitely pass those along to you both on the TV side and the WJZ.com side.

Any thunderstorms will die down overnight as the cold front keeps on moving out of here. Cooler and drier air will follow the front. Although we are still going to be running above average, highs will only be in the 80s the next two days as compared to the upper 90s as of late. Also, the dewpoints/humidity will take a huge hit with a dry, northwesterly breeze. Highs will start to build again over the weekend, but not like what we are currently experiencing. There is the chance for a late-day thunderstorm on Saturday and a shower or thunderstorm again on Sunday. It looks like that weak system gets out of here for the beginning of the week.

As if heat and severe weather weren't enough, just wanted to remind you that today is June 1 and the start of hurricane season. We will have a lot more on that in the upcoming weeks and months.
