Black Friday Deals Extended To Multiple Days
BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- The holidays are known as the busiest times of the year for retailers. As Meghan McCorkell reports, why major sales have moved beyond Black Friday.
Santa's arrival is still a month away, but retailers are already ringing in the Black Friday sales. Some stores have already begun offering discounts and deals. These sales used to be reserved for only Black Friday.
"We do have presales going on now… actually the whole week leading up into Thanksgiving," Tamikia Reddick, employee at New York & Company said.
At Hunt Valley Town Center, deals and markdowns are enticing shoppers to start early.
"It's so important because I'm trying to stretch the dollar," a holiday shopper said.
"The bow I was looking at is $100 off… some of them are $50 off," another holiday shopper said.
Inside Walmart, shoppers are also bargain hunting. Harry Anuszewski, general manager at the Walmart in Cockeysville, said the store started offering a full week of Black Friday deals last weekend.
"So we give customers the ultimate opportunity to shop for great prices," Anuszewski said.
The National Retail Federation predicts 67.6 million people will shop over the Holiday weekend. More than 18 percent plan to check out deals on Thanksgiving. Kathy Grannis with National Retail Federation said it's normal for so many people to participate in the Thanksgiving holiday weekend shopping.
"We've learned that in a down economy, a bigger Black Friday weekend is a lot more likely," Grannis said. "Meaning that consumers are simply very driven by that deal and that promotion and that extreme discount."
Normally only big box stores or retailers in the mall participate in Black Friday discounts. But this year, City Sports in Harbor East will participate. City Sports , Evan Weber, said they will open its doors for the first time on Thanksgiving night with 25 percent off the entire store.
"This is unprecedented," Weber said. "In my seven years at City Sports I've never seen deals quite like what we're offering for Thanksgiving night."
Other stores opening Thanksgiving day include Sears, Target, Kmart and Toys "R" Us. Meanwhile, there are major retailers that have refused to open on Thanksgiving including Bed, Bath & Beyond and Marshalls.
