Black Bear Spotted Several Times In Montgomery County
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WJZ) -- A Montgomery County woman is telling a bear of a story, and has the video to prove it.
Kai Jackson reports.
Cathy Gardner saw it but still can't believe that a bear made himself at home this week on the deck of her Gaithersburg, Montgomery County home.
"He stuck around for about 40 minutes," Gardner said.
The Department of Natural Resources says the bear is a two-year-old male. They estimate it weighs between 80 and 100 pounds.
"It's actually not that unusual this time of year," said Paul Peditto, Department of Natural Resources.
DNR says most likely the bear was attracted to the food in Gardner's bird feeder.
The agency had plans to trap the bear, but he went back into the woods.
"We're not going to chase it around but if we do have an opportunity to immobilize it and relocate it, we will," Peditto said.
The bear left the Gardners' deck in a bit of a mess, but it didn't hurt any humans or pets.
"He would look at us every once in a while, He even came up to the door," Gardner said.
The Department of Natural Resources says if you encounter a bear, move away slowly and make loud noises.
