Bill Could Limit Student Rentals At Univ. Of Md.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- A bill under consideration in Prince George's County could restrict the number of single-family homes available in College Park as rentals for University of Maryland students.
The bill, sponsored by county councilman Eric Olson, would allow College Park and other neighborhoods near college campuses to create special zones in which single-family homeowners would face restrictions if they wanted to convert their property to a rental unit.
Existing rental homes would not be affected.
Olson says the bill would prevent neighborhoods from being overrun with rental properties and would make College Park more attractive to university faculty.
WNEW-FM reports that homeowners were divided at a public hearing Tuesday. Some felt the restrictions might make it difficult to sell their home; others welcomed a chance to limit rowdy student rentals.
