D.C. Bike To Work Day Surpasses 10,000 Rider Goal
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Organizers of Washington's Bike to Work event say they surpassed their goal of registering more than 10,000 riders.
Organizers say 11,000 commuters took to the streets on two wheels Friday, the largest turnout in the regional event's history.
The event featured dozens of stops throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia with food, entertainment and prizes for cyclists. Organizers say commuters who bike to work help reduce traffic and pollution while also getting some exercise. Nicholas Ramfos, the director of event sponsor Commuter Connections, says commuters throughout the region are looking for ways to make their commutes easier and cheaper and bicycling is an option for a healthier ride to work.
A 20-mile community ride is also planned Sunday in Washington.
