Annapolis Adds Bike-Share Program
ANNAPOLIS (WJZ) — Bike lanes are coming to Annapolis, but it may mean losing some parking spots downtown.
"Every cool city in this country is investing in bike share and bike infrastructure," Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said. "Annapolis is certainly cool, and now you'll see these around town,"
And for a couple bucks, you can bike around this historic city.
The city will install a temporary bike lane on Main Street and remove parking from one side of downtown for a month.
The $100,000 project will launch September 16.
In addition to the five-foot bike path, the city will also install temporary 4-feet wide sidewalk platforms for additional seating for dining visitors.
"We want to get people out of their cars as soon as they get out of their cars in Annapolis and we want to get them walking or biking around the city," Buckley said.
Annapolis plans to add more bikes and they'll connect to $30 million worth of new county bike paths.
"So that someone can go from Deal to Linthicum to Ft. Meade and out to Sandy Point State Park safely on a connected set of bike trails," County Executive Steve Schuh said.
Baltimore's most recent bike-share program failed in part due to vandalism.
The Annapolis bikes have built-in locks to prevent vandalism.
There are 50 bikes to start at nine locations, but they can be locked anywhere. An app will find a bike closest to you.
