BALTIMORE (AP) -- Vice President Joe Biden is visiting Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to help launch a cancer-fighting effort.

Biden's office says in a statement that he'll participate Tuesday in a discussion of the White House's $1 billion proposal for a new initiative to find cancer cures.

Gov. Larry Hogan also is scheduled to speak at the event. Hogan's office says in a statement that the event includes dedication of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a Johns Hopkins graduate and longtime benefactor of the university.

Sidney Kimmel is a clothing-and-film-industry tycoon who has given tens of millions of dollars to Johns Hopkins for cancer research.
