BGE Imposters Scamming 'Vulnerable Customers' In Central Md.
PARKVILLE, Md. (WJZ)—Fooled by BGE imposters. Baltimore County Police are looking for thieves who dress as workmen.
Andrea Fujii tells us the latest victim is an elderly woman in Parkville.
Alberta, 85, --who doesn't want her face shown-- was home with her dog Hobbs on Aug. 9 when someone knocked on her door.
"He said he was from BGE and he says, 'We're not allowed to come into the house, but can I meet you out in the yard? We're gonna do some wiring outside,'" Alberta recalled.
After about 20 minutes outside with the alleged worker, Hobbs started barking. Knowing something was wrong, Alberta went back in the house and found someone had stolen thousands in cash and jewelry.
"All my drawers were empty, jewelry boxes on the floor," Alberta said.
Police say the thieves struck four times in three days--once in Dundalk, North Point and twice in Parkville.
BGE is now warning customers about these scams.
"They're targeting vulnerable customers, and certainly there is no place for that. So we work very closely with the law enforcement in central Maryland," said Linda Foy, BGE spokeswoman.
BGE says they'll never come to your home unannounced, and if they do, ask for identification.
"I hope people realize and do what I didn't do. And if I can help somebody that's why I'm doing this interview," Alberta said.
Victims describe the suspect who approaches them as a tall, thin white man in his 20s or 30s. If you have any questions about BGE workmen in your area, give them a call.
