Brandi Chastain's Goal
In the 1999 Women's World Cup the final vs China came down to penalty kicks after the teams remained scoreless after a full 90-minute game, and two -15 minute extra periods. In order to secure victory, Brandi Chastain just had to make the final penalty kick. She used her left foot, her non-dominant kicking foot, and scored the winning goal, and ripped her shirt off in celebration.
Abby Wambach Scores In 120th Minute
In the 2011 Women's World Cup Quarter Final, the U.S was down 2-1, with over-time almost over. In the 120th minute of the game, U.S Forward Abby Wambach scored a goal to tie the game, sending the game to penalty kicks. The U.S ended up winning the game on the penalty kicks, and advanced to the semi-finals.
Alex Morgan's Last Minute Goal
On Monday night, in the semi-final game at the Olympics vs. Canada, U.S Forward Alex Morgan scored the game winning goal in the 123rd minute with less than a minute until the game would have gone to penalty kicks. The final score of the game was 4-3.
U.S Women Win First Gold
The 1996 Olympic Summer games marked the first time the Women's soccer would be an event at the games. The team played China in the Gold Medal Match, winning with a final score of 2-1, marking the first Gold Medal won at the Olympics by U.S Women's soccer.
Kristine Lilly Saves U.S
Although not as famous as Brandi Chastain's play in this 1999 World Cup Final game, without this play by Lilly, the U.S would never have made it to penalty kicks. Lilly, a midfielder, saved a goal with a header in extra-time, preventing a Chinese victory.
