Battle Of North Point Celebrated At Former Battlefield Turned Elementary School
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—On this day, 1,998 years ago, the smoke cleared and Francis Scott Key saw the American flag was still flying at Ft. McHenry.
As Mike Schuh reports, students all over the country are studying what happened there, and now they have a new interactive online resource.
When you unroll a flag the size of the one which flew over Ft. McHenry during the British bombardment, it has more meaning when you do it on the actual battleground of the war.
In this case, the Battle of North Point, which is now the site of the Charlesmont Elementary School.
Ranger Vince Vaise took over.
On the "4th of September, Francis Scott Key, looking through his spy glass, he wasn't sure who won the battle," Vaise said.
These are the types of moments that kids the world over will now learn about.
They become the first to use an online interactive timeline and game, brought to life by MPT, the National Park Service and the Department of Education.
It's a big enough deal to bring a United States senator to the battlefield.
"There is no higher priority for the future than our education, so developing teaching tools to allow children to understand their community, how people gave of their lives to protect our country, to me that's what government should be doing," said Sen. Ben Cardin, (D) Maryland.
