Loyola University Gets $1M From Haig Estate
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore's Loyola University has received $1 million from the estate of former Secretary of State Gen. Alexander M. Haig Jr.
Haig's younger brother, the Rev. Frank Haig, is a professor emeritus of physics at the university.
Frank Haig says his brother saw a special value in the influence of his Catholic faith on the formation of American culture and considered education as central to the nation's health.
The gift will support a fellowship for undergraduate scientific research in the summer, an annual conference examining the relationship between science and theology, and improvements to the university's theater and modern language programs.
Haig, who died last year, was NATO supreme commander from 1974 to 1979 and secretary of state from 1981-1982.
