Baltimore To Sell Senator Theatre To Operators

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The city of Baltimore plans to sell the historic Senator Theatre to its current operators.

The Senator opened in 1939 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's one of a handful of independently run, single-screen theaters in the country that still shows first-run movies.

The city purchased the Art Deco landmark in 2009 after it went into foreclosure. The quasi-public Baltimore Development Corp. then selected Kathleen Cusack and her father James "Buzz" Cusack to run it. The Cusacks are renovating the theater, adding three new screens and a wine bar.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Kimberly Clark, the acting president of the BDC, announced the sale Thursday but did not disclose the terms. It will be submitted to the city's Board of Estimates for approval.
