Baltimore Technology Entrepreneur Has Seen Industry Evolution

Gregory D. Stewart has been in technology long enough to have witnessed its evolution first hand. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in liberal studies with a concentration in electrical engineering before there was a computer science major.

Stewart is currently owner of the CMIT Solutions franchise of Baltimore County West which provides IT services and solutions to small and medium-sized businesses. Prior to this, he had a 26 year career with Xerox where he was vice president of graphic communications channels and partners.

What inspired you to get involved in technology and to buy the CMIT franchise?

"Since a young age, I have always been fascinated with technology. Regarding CMIT, I've always been an entrepreneur. For the first half of my career at Xerox, I worked in marketing and sales, where I learned about technological advances first hand and how rapidly technology changes. In the second half of my career, I worked as a manager and executive, developing the knowledge and skill I use in small business today at CMIT."

How does your educational background relate to your current role?

"With the help of my parents, I started a newspaper route with 85 daily customers and grew it to over 600 daily customers. This taught me the value of customer service; and combined with my college coursework and my work at Xerox, prepared me to operate my own business."

How has your education helped to further your career and contributed to your success?

"Having a degree from Johns Hopkins certainly helped to open doors, but it was the skills and knowledge developed there which were key for me. Since they focused on inquiry and innovation, they taught me to take risks in developing products and solutions. It all led to a successful career at Xerox, and I'm building on that success at CMIT."

What is some advice you can offer others looking to go into technology?

"Believe the unimaginable and try to achieve it. It is all about creative problem solving. Always think about how technology can help the user, then take risks and deliver solutions to your client's problems."
