Baltimore Surrounded By Construction Projects
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Getting around town is starting to get a little tricky. Several major construction projects are happening all at the same time and on our busiest highways.
Kai Jackson explains if you don't plan ahead of time, you could get stuck in traffic.
The changes to the Liberty Road/695 exchange have already taken place. There's no question drivers around the state will start experiencing delays and headaches. The State Highway Administration believes that will be offset by a combination of improved safety and better travel.
All over Baltimore, roads are undergoing a major transformation this summer. The SHA wants to get you up to speed.
"Construction is just about everywhere. You're either going to have a major project or a minor project somewhere along your travels," said Valerie Burnette Edgar, State Highway Administration.
695 along Liberty Road will see some of the biggest changes. The overpass is being replaced, a $25 million project. Tuesday night, the SHA split lanes and installed concrete barriers to direct the flow of traffic.
"It's confusion right now but they're working on it," said one man.
On the JFX, they've been doing road repaving or resurfacing, funneling three lanes of traffic down to one. That's creating quite a bottleneck.
The overpass at 695 in Charles Street is also being replaced. The project is scheduled to be finished next summer. Some big headaches now, but leaders say it will be a big payoff down the road.
"Very slowly and cautiously because a lot of cars don't know where they're going. Everybody is weaving in and out of lanes," said one.
The Liberty Road overpass is also scheduled to be finished next summer. Both overpasses on Baltimore National Pike are scheduled for completion in summer 2013.
