Baltimore Sun Proposes Employee Buyouts
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Sun is offering buyouts to some employees.
Baltimore Sun Media Senior Vice President of Marketing Judy Berman said in a statement Thursday that the company is bargaining with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild over the terms of a voluntary buyout offer. She says this is the first such offer since 2008.
Guild Executive Director Cet Parks says the proposal would affect a maximum of 22 positions, including columnists, critics, copy editors, account executives and sales assistants. Workers could get two weeks of pay per year of service. He says the guild wants to push back the early September deadline.
The newspaper eliminated 55 newsroom positions in July 2008 and laid off 61 more employees in April 2009.
The Sun is owned by Tribune Co., which is in bankruptcy proceedings.
