Baltimore Students Return From China
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Some Baltimore City high school students took the trip of a lifetime.
Jessica Kartalija reports eight students just returned from a trip to Baltimore's sister city in China.
WJZ was there as students at Carver Vo Tech prepared for a trip around the world. Eight students are the beneficiaries of a plan put in place 26 years ago when William Donald Schaefer was mayor. He made Baltimore a sister city with one in China.
"I'm very excited. This is unprecedented to have our students go to China," said Principal Kirk Sykes.
Students took banners and gifts to Chinese students learning English. Students returned to Baltimore Monday; they had been overseas for 10 days.
At the city's Board of Estimates, the students presented Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake with a statue, a Chinese tradition they learned overseas; presenting gifts is a sign of honor and respect.
In the future, some Chinese teachers the students met in China will come here to Baltimore City.
The school says the $50,000 trip was made possible by Carver alumni, McCormick Spice and Maritime Applied Physics Lab.
