Baltimore Rally Planned As A Call For Justice For Trayvon Martin
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Justice for Trayvon. The outrage over the murder of a Florida teenager sparks calls for activism here in Baltimore.
Meghan McCorkell has more on a rally planned for Monday.
It was one month ago Monday that 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed. Now, calls for justice for the teen are getting louder all over the country.
Activists prepare a sea of signs calling for justice for Trayvon Martin. The unarmed teen was walking through a gated Sanford, Fla. community wearing a hoodie. He was gunned down by neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. He claimed the teen looked suspicious. Zimmerman has not yet been arrested.
"We have to stand together shoulder to shoulder as brothers and sisters to say that we're outraged and we want justice," said Rev. Cortly Witherspoon, organizing rally.
Monday, people in Baltimore will stand together in a rally for Trayvon.
The march will begin at Pratt and Light Streets and then head to city police headquarters.
"It could have been them. It could have been my sons," said Sharon Lindsay, parent.
Lindsay will march with her sons. One of them is the same age as Martin.
She says her heart aches for the family.
"As much as we do across the nation, it still will not take that pain away. The pain will never ben taken away," she said.
In many area churches, Sunday services were filled with hoodies in a show of solidarity with Martin.
"It could have been me. It could have been my friend. It could have been one of your family members. It could have been anybody involved in this: black, white, Puerto Rican, Asian. It could have been anybody," said Faith Reid, Bethel AME Church.
That sentiment is touching many nationwide.
A large rally is also planned Monday in Sanford, Fla. Thousands are expected to march to the town's convention center.
A grand jury will be convened next month to determine if George Zimmerman will face charges. A special prosecutor has been assigned to review the case.
