Baltimore Port Businesses Looking To Cut Pollution
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Officials at the Port of Baltimore say they are working to keep pollution out of the Chesapeake Bay.
Richard Sheckells Jr., chief of environmental initiatives for the Maryland Port Administration, says the port has installed storm drain screens and removed underground fuel tanks. It has also used a federal grant to help businesses install cleaner burning diesel technology.
Meanwhile, companies at the port are recycling materials and running tugboats at slower speeds to burn less fuel.
Michael Derby, a general manager for a Scandinavian line that ships automobiles and farm equipment at the Dundalk Marine Terminal, says tighter environmental regulations that could drive up costs are behind much of the effort.
