Buck Showalter Updates Us On Spring Training
Baltimore Orioles coach Buck Showalter joins The Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the Orioles spring training.
Baltimore has been looking pretty good as of late, with the O's in the playoffs, Ravens winning the Lombardi Trophy. Too bad the Terps' Basketball team isn't having a great season too to "keep this thing going." But Buck is excited to keep that energy alive all summer.
Down to position talk: 1st and 2nd base. "We'll see." Buck doesn't like to give much away and when asked about Brian Roberts and Chris Davis, he responds with his standard, "we'll see." Adjustments will always be made but he reassures the guys that nothing says if these guys are healthy and playing up to their potential that this won't be a great lineup.
As for pitching competition. Some pitchers stepped up last year and really surprised some of the fans. Free agents know that Baltimore's reputation is that we're a team of opportunity. People want to come here to get a chance to show their stuff. Nobody's spot is guaranteed. Obviously Chen and Hammel will be 2 of the 5 but the other positions are open to competition.
Tsuyoshi Wada is getting a lot of press and the Japanese media is wondering about his recovery and when he will be able to play. Everyone wants to handycap him and figure out his schedule to play in May or June. Buck shuts down the conversation until he's "toes to rubber in Camden."
Also Buck tells us about Kevin Gausmans first spring training in the big leagues.
Pedro Strop has to come back to last season when he was hot, he did have a down period throughout last season before a late rebound. Buck likes the look on his face and how comfortable he is in his life right now.
Buck gives his thoughts on Earl Weaver. Earl was looking forward to camp this year and Buck talks about how much fun he had last year in Spring Training. He wants to continue to honor him this year, especially through their play.
