Baltimore Man Sentenced To 50 Years In Carryout Shooting
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A teenager whose family turned him in to police after he fatally shot a man during a robbery of a carryout restaurant has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Eighteen-year-old Markell Jones was sentenced Tuesday in a Baltimore court after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 52-year-old Freddie Jones. The Joneses were not related.
Prosecutors say Markell Jones and two others went into a Greenmount Avenue carryout on Oct. 31, 2011 to rob customers. Authorities say Markell Jones shot Freddie Jones three times.
The crime was recorded on the restaurant's surveillance system and the video was broadcast. On Nov. 2, prosecutors say Markell Jones' grandfather told Baltimore police his grandson was the shooter.
Markell Jones was escorted by his grandfather and parents to police to surrender.
